Stellaris Is Coming To Consoles! It's The First Grand Strategy Game For Consoles

Yes, I couldn't believe it either. But apparently, some people want this. Or perhaps someone in Paradox wanted this. You'll be able to play Stellaris on the PS4 and Xbox One.

Paradox has to be super careful about how they represent the game in trailer. The last thing they want is accusation that console players have been misled by trailers that showcase the game close up and is not representative of 99.9% of how the game looks. This trailer is cool and all that, but doesn’t help.

The Paradox Interactive presser claims that it's the first grand strategy game for consoles.

The popular space-exploration game will be the first ever grand strategy game to come to consoles, bringing more deep strategy, resource management, and political intrigue than has ever been available to consolenauts before.

Paradox hasn't announced a release date for Stellaris Console Edition but clarified that there will be two versions, a standard edition and a deluxe edition which includes the Plantoids Species Pack, Leviathans Story Pack and Utopia Expansion when they are released.

Which means, the expansion will be released at a later date after the release of Stellaris Console Edition. It's not completely an internal Paradox project as they are working with Tantalus Media on the PS4 and Xbox One consoles.

Tantalus Media are no strangers to Paradox as they previously worked on the console port for Cities: Skylines. They have the pedigree of developing solid ports.

The decision to port Stellaris is a bold one considering this was always been the Achilles heel of Paradox's complex grand strategy games.

But if there was any Paradox game that could have been ported to consoles, it would be Stellaris as I've written in my guide for Paradox Grand Strategy game beginner's, Stellaris is the easiest to learn of the lot.

Grand Strategy is often considered a niche genre even on the PC, but we believe that while a console audience exists, a game like Stellaris simply hasn’t made it to those platforms yet. With the help of Tantalus’ expertise, we’re happy to take that leap!

If this was successful, it could open Paradox grand strategy games nicely to a whole new audience that has never experienced anything like it.

I'm a little concerned about game updates though. The announcement for Stellaris Console Edition did clarify that the launch version will be running Stellaris version 1.7.

Which, when update 2.2 which I wrote about here, releases for the PC sometime in the future, it's going to render Stellaris on the console out of date. We'll have two sets of players with wildly different games.

This pretty much rules out any cross-platform multiplayer for certain. But the fact that they've managed to port Stellaris for consoles would be a big achievement on its own right, so kudos for them for attempting this.

I honestly couldn't imagine how you're going to control the vastness of Stellaris with a controller. This image is making me dizzy.

A Demo of Stellaris Console Edition will be available on the Gamescom show floor tomorrow (or today, depending on when you read this).

Now I know most of you probably are huge PC gamers, but is anyone thinking of getting this? I'll probably get it when it's released to check it how well they've managed to work out the UI and incorporated the depth of Stellaris for the consoles.
