Steel Division 2 Will Feature More Realistic Armour Penetration

Steel Division 2 Will Feature More Realistic Armour Penetration

Steel Division 2 by Eugen Systems is moving to the Eastern Front and with the geographical move, it’s also bringing some very exciting changes to the mechanics of the game. Here’s some details regarding tactics in Steel Division 2.

In the new dev diary, Eugen Systems states that the velocity and weight of your projectiles will impact its armour penetration values.

In the first Steel Division, due to the combat range being capped at one kilometer, the 88 mm gun of a Tiger tank could be less effective compared to the 75 mm gun of a Panther tank when firing at distant targets. To be more realistic, we changed that in Steel Division 2, as the weight and velocity of an 88 mm shell, for instance, will now allow it to penetrate more armor at longer range.

The changes in mechanics are mostly done due to one single major change. Th maximum distance of engagement has been increased to 2 kilometres ( it was 1.5 kilometres in Steel Division). This single change has required the team to relook at a lot of the tactical aspects of the game.

Tanks can also now move in light forests.

The increase in scale means that maps are now more dangerous at longer range, and we needed the player to have more flexibility in planning their options to fight (or hide) from combat. Heavy forest is still off-limits to tanks; like the first game, only infantry can move in this type of terrain.

Firing on the move was something most tank crew didn’t do during world war 2. But in the eastern front it was a common sight to see T-34s rushing German tanks while firing at them. In Steel Division you can now do this. However, there will be an accuracy penalty for firing on the move but if you do it close enough, it could be devastating.

Eugen Systems are also adding a lot more types of critical hits in Steel Division 2. This also goes along well with new special ammunitions.

Using exotic materials, they were rare and expensive and only deployed in limited numbers such as the tungsten Panzergranate 40 (Germans) or the BR-365P APCR shell (Russians). We wanted to find a way for older tank models, such as a Panzer III, to pack a punch and have the ability to deal with stronger opponents. At the same time, we wanted to have something that was powerful, more precise, but limited in availability, forcing the player to be careful in when they choose to use their special shells.

Steel Division 2 is looking very interesting the more I learn about it. We still don’t have a release date for it other than a 2019 release but it is available for pre-order.
