Star Ruler 2 Is Now Open Source. Devs Hope Community Will Make Something Out Of It
Update 24/7/2018: The devs have clarified that downloading a free open source version of the game isn't an issue as long as it abides by the MIT open source license. The paid version will continue to be on sale as it includes the soundtrack.
No Star Ruler 2 isn't a new and improved cosmic measuring device. It's a 4X real time strategy game by indie devs Blind Mind Studios. And they've just made it open source for the world to dissect, improve and hopefully support the game into the future.
It didn't do too well and the studio has been dormant for a couple of years. Not wanting the game and the code go to waste, the devs announced on the Steam Community page that they have decided to release it under the open source license.
Something to note. The game being open source does not mean the game itself is now freeware... technically. It just means the code is available for anyone to download, tinker, and build an executable if they want.
The devs have stated that they are fine if people get to play this for free from a build of the open source code.
What this means is that it's not so straightforward to compile and build your own free version of the game, but they've included instructions.
While the devs are okay with people playing the game for free, it is unclear if they'd be okay with people distributing a free version of the game.
Considering the game is still on sale on Steam and other digital distribution platforms, this leads to a rather sticky situation.
It's only a matter of time we'd find a free version of Star Ruler 2 online (if there's one thing I've learnt about the internet, is that the internet works fast). If you're the adventurous type, you could download the open source code and attempt to build it: https://github.com/BlindMindStudios/StarRuler2-Source
Star Ruler 2 was a pretty decent little 4X strategy game. Its main thing was that the ships were more realistically scaled to planets and such. Battles could include thousands of units and were epic!
Hope to see the community keep this game alive with updates. There's something in here, maybe with extra polish and thought, it could truly be special.
NOTE: I've reached out to the dev team to clarify their stance on free versions of their game if it becomes available, and what will they do with the paid versions on digital distribution platforms.
