New Total War: THREE KINGDOMS Ambush of Sun Ren Gameplay Video

New Total War: THREE KINGDOMS Ambush of Sun Ren Gameplay Video

Creative Assembly has released a new 'Let's Play' video showcasing an ambush battle from Total War: THREE KINGDOMS, ahead of Gamescom 2018. This battle will be the one available for people to try out on the show floor.

The video begins with a look at the campaign map, it's sweeping vistas and mountain ranges. A brief explanation about the political situation and the battle that is about to unfold is given.

What's interesting in this battle other than what looks like a regular Total War battle, is that unit appear to fire arrows above tree lines like they do with walls previously. Smart improvement.

The hero duel bit is something I'm still pretty sceptical about. It just doesn't seem interesting. Point your hero to the enemy hero and watch some nice choreographed moves.

Sure, it's clear the emphasis in THREE KINGDOMS is on heroes, but it doesn't add anything interesting to the battle itself. You essentially lose control of your hero/general for a brief period.

There's some new info Creative Assembly has revealed about these heroes. There will be 5 types of heroes.

The vanguard who is a powerful frontline warrior.

The strategist who will enable new formation types and debuff enemy armies.

The commander which is your typical Total War general.

The sentinels who are basically tanks that are tough to kill.

And champions, heroes specialised in taking down other heroes.

It is also revealed that each hero gets 6 slots and each army can have up to 3 heroes, which seems like smaller armies than previous Total War. Although I must say I like the idea of units tied to heroes. Gives heroes more identity.

However, this detail is only relevant for the Romance mode, which is the more mythical take on the campaign. Creative Assembly hasn't revealed the realistic mode yet, so we don't quite know what's the difference there.

Anyway, I'm hoping we get to see a campaign let's play from Creative Assembly at Gamescom 2018. The battles look great, but we've essentially been playing the same type of Total War battle for many years now.

Total War: THREE KINGDOMS releases in Spring 2019.
