My Thoughts on Northgard's Clan of the Snake DLC
It’s been out for quite a while I know. Been a roller coaster month for me. Didn’t wan’t to do a full review of this, but I wanted to share with you my opinion on it. So here goes, my thoughts on Northgard’s Snake clan DLC.
What is Northgard: Clan of the Snake DLC
Svafnir, the Clan of the Snake adds a new clan to Northgard. This is purely a multiplayer/single-player skirmish only DLC. There ain’t no campaign attached to this.
With this DLC, you get one of the most unique clans in Nothgard with their very own warchief that works entirely different from other warchiefs. There’s some new clan exclusive knowledge to unlock in the lore tree.
Every ability, exclusive building and knowledge is designed to enhance the clan’s play style. Using trickery, guerrilla tactics and dishonorable methods.
Signy. Warchief of the Clan of the Snake.
Perhaps the biggest difference in this DLC is Signy, the clan’s warchief. Like the new skirmisher unit (which was added in a patch to the base game), she is a cunning leader that lurks in the shadows to strike the unassuming enemy.
Interestingly, Signy grows in power the longer you play. She grows older each year. There are three stages to her ‘growth’
Age 15 - The Cunning
She starts as a melee character. Not the toughest warchief in the game, you have to keep an eye on the health bar.
Age 16 - Pride of the Clan
She now gains a ranged attack and supported by a group of warriors and skirmishes, she can soften enemies up while staying safe.
Age 18 - Tears of the Earth
Scorched Earth!!! This one ability is the ‘nuke’ button for the Clan of Snake player. At this age, she can walk freely among the wildlife and won’t be attacked by them. The scorched earth ability reduces output in a tile and gives your units 50% damage bonus when fighting in the tile. It’s one heck of an ability that will turn the tide of battle for you.
With such a unique warchief and even a knowledge you unlock that enables you to steal an opponents lore, the Clan of the Snake DLC is an interesting one that presents a different approach to Northgard.
You’ll be using hit and run techniques and targeting civilians to gain most from the special abilities of the clan. You’ll probably have to rethink strategies and tactics you’ve grown accustomed to.
At a mere USD4.99 (RM12.50) Clan of the Snake is a relatively low-priced DLC. Your enjoyment of what it brings to the table depends on how you play Northgard.
If multiplayer is your thing, this DLC offers good value that adds a new play style to the game. But if you mostly play solo in single player, Clan of the Snake is less of a great proposition.
I’m personally not a big fan of DLCs that add factions to a game, and this method of developing DLCs has courted controversy for other games in the past (do you remember Evolve?).
I would much rather have a higher priced DLC that adds a much larger chunk of gameplay. Like a more traditional expansion. Because of that, I can’t unequivocally recommend the Clan of the Snake DLC for Northgard. Your enjoyment may vary drastically.
