Age of Wonders: Planetfall Gameplay Video Reveal. Sentient Plant Species Confirmed!

Triumph Studios' sci-fi space-based 4X, Age of Wonders: Planetfall has finally shown some actual gameplay. An hour plus stream on Twitch has been condensed into this 30-minute video.

Despite what many are perhaps prematurely calling it Age of Wonders with a sci-fi skin, this video would settle it. Planetfall is quite a different beast.

There are things that make it the same, it is 4X, but it very different in a lot of facets of the game compared to Age of Wonders 3.

To start things off, the sector system is very interesting. Your city seems to project influence and claim over the neighbouring sector. You could move a unit into the sector and claim it as one of your provinces.

Once that's done you can then build it up as a zone type, such as an industrial zome to give you a bigger boost. What this means is that you can claim sectors which you can then specialise them to focus on one particular thing.

There are lots of neat things to discover in the tech-tree, which has been split in two. Military and Development get their own tech-three. There's also a tree for Promethean technology.... which is not a reference to Mass Effect but some sort of pre-cursor race which has some impressive technology plus a tree for Doctrines which reminds me of Stellaris's Traditions.

Reputation is another big thing. Depending on how you treat other factions, you will be received differently by the faction in the world. So if you declare war without a proper cause, you will be known as untrustworthy and eventually dishonourable.

Depending on your reputation, you'll have different diplomatic options with other factions, which is an almost RPG-like mechanic.

Combat is also a little different. It's a bit like the new XCOM whereby your action point depends on how far you move. There's even an overwatch mode.

It's a brief demo of the gameplay but there's lots of neat stuff we've learnt about the game. If you're looking forward to it, definitely check the video out. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is releasing in 2019 for the PC, Xbox One and PS4.
