Age of Empires II Has An Official Tournament & It Has Started!
That's right, the Age of Empires II Escape Champions League is an 8-team league. The league is scheduled to have matches throughout the year with different themes. It's pretty epic!
The qualification stages are over and the first stages are underway. The tournament has a mix of 1V1 and 4V4 match ups. What's interesting is the way they'll do the different stages.
They are themed after different regions. The maps and the civilizations used will be specific to the region.
The stages and dates as below:
- Europe East - 21st July 2018 to 18th August 2018
- Africa - 8th September 2018 to 6th October 2018
- Middle East - 27th October 2018 to 24th November 2018
- East Asia - 15th December 2018 to 2nd February 2019
- Southeast Asia - 23rd February 2019 to 23rd March 2019
- Americas - 13th April 2019 to 11th May 2019
- Europe West - 1st June 2019 to 29th June 2019
The top two teams and individuals will advance to a grand final and take on each other in an offline match. The location of the grand final hasn't been... well... finalised yet.
Oh yes, the bit you're probably all reading this piece for, you can follow the latest matches live on Twitch. Right over here: https://www.twitch.tv/escapeaoe

The prize pool is just a meagre USD$60,000 (blame it on DOTA 2 and League of Legends for their insane prize pools), but there's a lot of passion going into this. Since we haven't had a proper Age of Empires II tournament... well... in ages (I'm on a roll with the puns today), I'm willing to overlook the prize money.
As a fan of Age of Empires II, I'm just happy and excited we're even having like a proper tournament for it. Damn with the prize pool! All I can say is, the King is back baby!
Time to play the Age of Empires II soundtrack on Spotify while watching some intense competition online.
