UPDATED: Total War: THREE KINGDOMS First Gameplay Trailer Is Out! Hype Rating 8. Release Delayed to Spring 2019
UPDATE: The first gameplay trailer for Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is out right now. It focuses on a siege battle led by Cao Cao. Watch it below.
It's been a while since we've heard any new details about Total War: THREE KINGDOMS. That changes today as Creative Assembly releases a new in-engine trailer and some nuggets of information.
It's a really well-done trailer. Great mood, story and transitions. The trailer featured familiar Chinese warlords who battled to unite China. It focused on Cao Cao specifically.
Who is Cao Cao?
Cao Cao was a Chinese warlord during the Han Dynasty that rose to great power and influence during the era. He was the central figure in the romanticised tale of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which Total War: THREE KINGDOMS is based on... part of it.
What's Different About the Campaign
According to Creative Assembly, THREE KINGDOMS will introduce two single-player campaigns. The 'Romance Mode' is based on the romaticised novel 'The Romance of the Three Kingdoms'.
This is the bit that Creative Assembly has been focusing on revealing to the press. It makes sense considering it is a massive departure from previous historical Total War games.
But to be honest with you, it's isn't a huge departure if you compare it to say, Total War: WARHAMMER. You'll have larger than life warlords that you control on the battlefield and on the strategic map and more mythical elements in the game.
These warlords, which will now have their own sub-class, special powers that can turn the tide of battle. And in a nod to the romanticised historical source, these warlords can be locked into a duel to the death while the battle rages on.
The warlords also have their likes and dislikes. They have a new relationship mechanic where the characters in THREE KINGDOMS are connected somehow (details are sketchy). Are they satisfied with their position and lot in life? These will have an impact on their performance on the battlefield.
If all these sound too 'fantasy' to you and you want a more realistic historical experience in your Total War campaigns, there will be a 'Classic Mode'. Something that's a bit less mythical and romanticised.
It's Been Delayed!
With the release of this trailer, it has been revealed that Total War: THREE KINGDOMS has been delayed to Spring 2019. That's basically some time in Q1 2019. I have to admit this didn't surprise me. We didn't hear any news about the game since it was announced.
Creative Assembly is still holding lots of new details close to their chest. A new agent system was hinted but not elaborated. The new relationship system/ soap opera mechanic. Just how 'mythical' will the Romantic Mode be? We hope to learn more during E3 2018 which begins June 12th.
