Space Hulk: Tactics Announced. Not To Be Confused With Space Hulk, Space Hulk: Ascension & Space Hulk Deathwing
There's something to be said about the Warhammer 40k franchise video game adaptations. Recent games haven't been so kind. Even the once mighty RTS developers, Relic Entertainment screwed up Dawn of War III. Now we have Space Hulk: Tactics.
A History of Bad Space Hulk Games
The Space Hulk name has a pretty trashy reputation on Steam, thanks to 3 utterly mediocre existing titles. The first Space Hulk on Steam was developed by the relatively unknown Full Control Studios to below average reviews. Released in 2013, it's a turn-based tactics game based on the Space Hulk boardgame.
A year later, the studio then developed a standalone sequel called Space Hulk: Ascension as an attempt to fix what was wrong with the first one. It did slightly better, but it was disappointingly average.
And then we got Space Hulk Deathwing which was a Left 4 Dead like 4 player first person shooter/action co-op game. Developed by Streum On Studio, again, an unknown studio, it was mired with technical issues and gameplay that wasn't fun.
Deathwing also received an Enhanced Edition which added some new cool weapons and neat doodads, but it did little to fix the imbalanced gameplay.
Space Hulk: Tactics... A New Hope?
Getting back to the just announced Space Hulk: Tactics, this one is being made by Cyanide Studios. There's a slightly better promise here as the studio also developed the generally well-received Blood Bowl games.
There's very little to go by from the trailer, with most of the touted "features" being pretty standard fare. Nothing that differentiates it from the first to Space Hulk tactical games on Steam.
There is however what seems like a new card mechanic. These cards can be used to impart buffs or special powers to individual units or the squad. They can also be converted to extra action points.
I believe this leads to some pretty interesting scenarios. Do you keep the card to use later, or sacrifice it and convert it to get extra action points to attack a genestealer that's in your face.
Space Hulk: Tactics is targeted for a 2018 release for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. We'll learn more about the game during E3 2018 which begins on June 12.
For now, I'll leave you with this video from Nostalgia Nerd on YouTube, showcasing the classic Space Hulk game for the PC that was released back in 1993.
